Ok, I’m getting the itch. This Friday the 12th will mark one full month that I have not been on the scale. Who would’ve thunk I would have made it this far? But now I’m starting to feel like I would like to get on there just to touch base to see where I’m at.
I know (at least I think I know!) that I haven’t gained any weight, so I’m looking to see if I’m the same or if I’ve lost due to the stomach virus from two weeks ago.
So I’m asking you to weigh in with your opinion on whether or not I should get on the scale.
Is once a month is a reasonable schedule to weigh myself?
What do you think? How often do you get on the scale and is it working for you?

I get on too much right now. It’s about once every day or every other day.

we all have to do what is right for us as individuals. i just hope i can keep it to once a month. i need to remember how easy it has been these past few weeks and know that i will survive.

I would have to say once a month sounds like a very smart thing to do!

what would be your motivation? I find that getting on the scale for me is external validation that I am being ‘good’. If it’s not lower then I freak out. So I have to be very mindful of the game that I play with the scale.

good question. well, i guess i just want to touch base. i’m not trying to lose and i would guess, based upon my clothing, that i haven’t gained. guess i just want to be sure i’m maintaining.

Personally, I think once a month is reasonable. But I guess the question really is, is it reasonable for you? Would it work for you? Or if you decide to weigh in once a month would it some how derail any progress you’ve made or haven’t made in your mind?
I’m really proud of you for doing this for so long. I know how tough it is. I’m trying to only weigh in once per week, but I get the itch to do it more than that. Congrats on making it this far. If you decide to go longer, I have no doubt that you’ll be able to do it.

you asked the probing question – is it reasonable for me? i guess i won’t know until i try, right? to go from getting on the scale every day (sometimes more than once!) for decades, to going a month now without getting on once, is huge for me. i’m still letting the idea simmer because as you said, i’m not sure it would work for me. i am just trying to maintain and want to keep a tab on that. thanks so much for your support!
p.s. for some reason, your comments always go to my spam file… not blog savvy enough to know why that happens… i always dig them out.

I’m not one to offer advice. I get on the scale usually 3 or more times a day.

I think once a month is just fine, but remember to do it first thing in the morning after you’ve gone to the bathroom and with no clothes on.
The only time I get on the scale is every 3 months when I go to my psychiatrist (med management/check in) appointments. I am supposed to go tomorrow but due to weather, I’ll have to reschedule.

trust me, jill, i won’t even have a hairband on when i get on the scale! it’s always first thing in the am, right after peeing, not a stitch of clothes or jewelry.

I hope I haven’t gained any weight and maybe I’ve even lost some? I’m at 175 right now. :’( (I’m 26 and only 5’4″)

if you are trying to lose, that would be great if you lost lbs. i’m 41 (yikes, almost 42!) and only 5’3″.

I am impressed as all get out that you’ve essentially gone a month without weighing in. I’ve gotten compulsive about the scale — making sure I haven’t screwed myself up — and I’m on it every single day.
But yes, I think once a month is good just to check in with yourself and to make sure that what you’re doing is working for you.

thanks, shelby! not weighing every day was much easier than i expected, however, my curiousity is starting to get the best of me at this point. i like how you phrased that – to make sure what you’re doing is working for you.

yes, i certainly know the urge you are referring to, patsy. once a week sounds fair. it’s good that you found what works for you!

Once per month is a fantastic schedule, if one can keep to it. I, alas, am a “sneak weigher” (frickin’ compulsive behaviors . . .), which I know I shouldn’t do because it derails me if I don’t get the number I’m looking for at that moment. On Monday, I sneak-weighed and it bothered me so much that I wrote a blog entry about a plateau I apparently haven’t hit, because I sneak-weighed today and found out I broke that arbitrary number I set for myself (225 lbs.).
So I would love to say I only weigh once per month, but I’ve found that I can’t keep to that when I’m close to hitting a goal mark.
Maybe you should weigh in, since you’ve been distressed since you got sick and couldn’t eat. Maybe it’ll help you feel less helpless about something that naturally changes. I appreciate very much that you’re sharing this concern, because I’m now aware that this is something I will be prone to do if/when I get into “goal weight” range.
My two cents? You have two days left and you’ve waited this long. Try to wait until Friday and treat this like any other compulsion–release it if you can and trust that, Just for Today, you are where you should be because you’re living within your food plan/abstinence.

ok, you are all making me feel really good about this choice to get on the scale once a month, that it is reasonable and not a compulsive behavior, so i think the 12th of each month (unless af i visiting
) will be my day to get on the scale just to check in on things.
i’m glad i somehow helped you, jess, by bringing up this topic and if i’ve waited this long, i can certainly wait two more days. thanks!

go for it. nothing wrong with checking in. you know you are doing well so don’t let the numbers get you crazy. any extreme is not healthy. hope it goes well for you!

I definitely think once a month would be okay….I am surprised at how easy it’s been for me to hop on the scale less and less! Honestly, I can usually tell what the scale is going to say – no necessarily with how my clothes fit, but by my activity level and eats. If you are just doing it to check in, I don’t see a problem with that at all!

thanks for “weighing-in”, holly =). i hear ya, i was surprised how easy this past month has been too. but with the stomach virus i had a couple of weeks ago and following my hunger cues (which is making me eat less somehow!) i’m really itching to know what i weigh. i don’t want to lose, just hoping i maintained.

I weigh in daily, because that’s what works for me. If weighing in monthly works for you, then do it! I think it’s important to try out a few different things to see what works best.

i’m just trying to stop some of the ‘controlling’ things i do in my life regarding food/eating, so that was just one thing for me to try to loosen my grip on. but you are right, sagan, we all have to do what’s best for us. i need to try to see how the monthly thing goes and i’ll make my decision of whether it works for me or not.
