Chocolatey Snack Share

One of the ways I have been successful at remaining binge-free for a little over two years is that I find/eat foods that give me the most bang for my buck, so to speak. Here is my criteria:

1. It needs to feel a little like a treat, something that I look forward to eating.
2. It needs to be the most amount of food for the least amount of calories (volumetrics)
3. It has to have nutritional value, primarily being high in fiber and/or protein.

So I just bought/tried these VitaTops by VitaMuffin. I can only speak for the flavor I got, the deep chocolate. They look, as the name would suggest, like the top part of a big muffin and these had big chocolate chips in them. They are really good AND full of fiber!

They come in six other flavors, but my market had only like one another and since I’m a chocolate girl, buying this flavor was a no-brainer for me.

You keep them in the freezer, then thaw them in either your toaster or microwave.

I put the deck of cards there so you could see that the VitaTop is pretty substantial in size for 100 calories of chocolate. They are 2 ounces each, have 100 calories, 1.5 grams of fat, 6 grams of fiber, 4 g of sugar alcohol and 3 grams of protein. It’s almost health food! What’s nice is that after you eat it, because of the fiber, you feel satiated for a while afterwards.

What’s nice too is that the first few ingredients listed are: water, whole wheat flour, organic evaporated cane juice and egg whites. I can pronounce all of them!

The only downside is that they are kinda pricey. You get four in a box, and at the market I shop at, they cost $4.19. I would love to find a coupon for them, otherwise, I will buy them once or twice a month and work them into my snack repertoire.

Ever tried these? If so, what did you think? What are your favorite go-to snacks that you feel give you the most bang for your buck?

I’ve heard the VitaTops are good. Haven’t tried ’em though. Funny, when I was restricting, I had some of the same requirements with my eating. I wanted stuff that would fill me up, for as little calories as possible and as much nutrition as possible. These days, I try to just keep a general balance, though I do like to eat foods with lots of protein and fiber to keep me feeling good. If I splurge, I still have a thing about needing to have SOME nutrition. I’ll rationalize that apple pie has, you know, fruit in it 🙂 Hehe. For me, the trick has been to let go a bit more, though I think some rules are good for anyone. We all need a little structure to stay on track!

it’s great that you are at the point of just trusting your instincts, letting go and keeping a general balance! i’m striving towards that, but it’s tough to let go of my rules. you mean apple pie doesn’t have nutritional value?!!?? =)

those look great! i am too cheap to buy them though;) I was the same as Kim when I was restricting….trying to eat foods with the least calories (and most fiber to get the lowest points on Weight Watchers). It sounded like the Volumetric-eating but was not good for my eating disordered mind. I was an equal-opprotunity binger and could binge on cauliflower…it didn’t matter. And after a “treat” I would feel guilty and eat Fiber One because I read how fiber can help you flush out fatty foods…can you see a cycle forming!!! Now wHen i am stressed and eat emotionally i want to eat fiber cereal…but then i just walk away. I do not want to turn my emotional eating episode(which is just a little debbie cake now ….not 3) into something abnormal.

i would be interested to hear your review of the Volumetrics plan….does it not play into your disordered thinking with food?

i know, they are expensive. i’ve gotten some good tips for coupons that i’m going to follow up on.
i’m totally cool with the volumentrics plan. my goal is to eat the most amount of food, for the fewest amount of calories, with the most nutrition. i don’t leaving a crumb on my plate, i want every morsel i’m entitled to if i’m counting the calories. i am a VERY fussy eater. there are so many foods, unfortunately many of them are heatlhy ones, that i don’t like, so i could never od on something like cauliflower. =)

I buy these organic animal crackers ( they are really cookies) from Costco. You can have like 13-14 for 125 calories & 3g of fat. I like them & the crunch!

I am probably one of the few that was not too excited about the VitaTops although I can see how people love them. It is not that I dislike them, I just prefer other things.

Finding our own little treat is the key! Glad you found your way & yes, they are expensive!

the animal crackers sound good! sometimes we need a crunch fix, a salt fix, a sweet fix, a creamy fix, so there are different go-to’s for each need. like you said, jody, finding your own little treat is the key.

I still haven’t tried these! I really want to. I need to look out for them at my store – I’ll put them on my list now. 🙂

My one requirement for a snack is either protein or fiber to fill me up. There are SO many things I love that I just don’t have as snacks anymore (i.e. granola bars and graham crackers) because what’s the point if they don’t fill you up? My favorite (at night) is greek yogurt with some Kashi Golden Sunshine sprinkled on top!

at the market i go to, they are in the freezer section near the frozen waffles and stuff like that.
it’s so funny you said that because i use to be the granola bar queen and now i opt not to have them because they don’t keep me filled.

I have never had them before, and I’m not sure if I should get them because they already trigger a binge craving just looking. 😉 And yes, they are making me want to eat six, so I guess they’re off my plan for now, at least.

My biggest bang-for-buck snack food is Trader Joe’s oat ring cereal (like Cheerios). It is a buttered popcorn and potato chip replacement, and it works great (for me). It’s a little salty, naturally sweet, it’s a little nutty, and definitely toasty. Plus it’s whole grain and not thick with grease. And no, I just can’t eat plain popcorn because it tastes like nothing to me. Popcorn must have butter and salt to even be worthy of being in my presence, and the amount of butter and salt it needs is so ludicrous that popcorn-as-Jess-is-willing-to-eat-it is off plan for its trigger food qualities and caloric density.

So, I have my Joe O’s, and I can take a pass on a whole subsection of junk food. And I am really thankful that I was lucky enough to get that kind of substitution for the whole starchy-crunchy snack food group.

well, there are only four in a box, so you would only be able to eat four =).
those joe o’s sound great! the next time i’m at trader’s joes i’m going to get a box. thanks, jess!

    I adore vitatops!
I’m a huge fan of their chocolate ones (the banana fudge is a rock star), and E adores the bran flavours. I prefer the tops to the muffins – they just taste better!

Some of my favourite snacks are bars, fresh fruit, and as of late, some chopped apple mixed with 1/4 cup of small curd cottage cheese and topped with cinnamon. Heavenly!
