3 Days ‘Til the Triathlon!

Holy crap! How did all this time fly by and it’s really almost the big day!?!?!

I have followed my 12-week training plan to the letter except for one itty bitty thing – the plan recommended always doing some drills at the beginning of each swim. Being an utter novice stupid and ignorant, and not knowing what drills really were, I thought it was more important for me to do the quantity of laps of the drills, as opposed to the drills themselves.

At some point during week 9, I read something about how important drills were and that swimming lap after lap was not going to help a whole lot. CRAP!!!! So I immediately got my hands on some drill devices in hopes that – better late than never.

But um, the swim is still pretty challenging, but now it is more of a breathing issue which I was scrambling around in the last day or two in search of the ‘magic tweak’ for at the 11th hour. I think I’ve got my answer and will try it out in the pool during my last training swim tomorrow (Friday) morning . I hope it works! If not, I will be fine too, it will just be a bit more of a struggle.

Through my training I learned which socks NOT to wear for the race (the ones that slid down during a recent run leaving a big ol’ blister on the back of my ankle). I’ve worn all the garments I’m going to wear for the race and ingested all the drinks and energy gels, so nothing will be new to my body that day.

But I do have one dilemma, that I hope that you, my uber-smart blogger friends, can help me with… Every morning, at home, I have one cup of caffinated coffee. I do this to help wake up and to um, shall I say get my ‘system’ moving. So of course I will have my cup of coffee on race morning as that is what my body is used to. Here is the dilemma – we will be staying in a hotel the night before the race, as the race is 90 minutes from our home and it’s already bad enough I need to be there @ 6:30 am for the 7:30 am start.

The hotel does not have a coffee maker in the room, nor do they have any in the lobby until 9:00 am (It’s a mom & pop hotel, what can I tell you!). They do, however, have a microwave in the room.. There is also, as I found out, a Wa-Wa about 2-1/2 blocks away.

So… do i bring my own coffee, etc, heat up a mug of water in the microwave (and possibly wake up my poor family who is trying to sleep) and have it? Do I get up even earlier (gag!) and walk to the Wa-Wa for coffee.

Please, dear readers, I need the awesome advice you always seem to have on how to deal with this little coffee problem! Thank you in advance!

So I will be ‘unplugged’ for a few days, starting Saturday, as we are making a long weekend out of this race as a little getaway, so I apologize in advance for not being able to read or comment on anything. However, you can be sure that I will tell you bore you with the details of the race within a day or two of getting back home.

Wish me luck!!!

Don’t get up and walk down the street – buy some Starbucks Via and use your microwave. That coffee rocks (I was very surprised to discover this).

And most of all, good luck in the tri! Don’t change up too much with that swim technique – you’ll be fine. You can work on form and proper breathing and drills (and all that stuff us non-swimmers know nothing about) for your next race.

thanks for the starbucks tip! so your vote is to wake my family, huh? =)

thanks for the good luck wishes. i will give the different breathing a shot tomorrow, but if it does not feel right, i’ll just do what i’ve been doing all along and just get ‘er done at the race. i have you for wonderful inspiration for that!

I would first say I love Wawa so I would suggest getting their coffee. I also drink my coffee in the morning with a small snack before my run. In an hour after the coffee takes effect I am ready to go. I know when I did my (first and only) half marathon last year I had to get up super early and was debating on what to do. I got a coffee at Wawa and head to the shuttle. After I was waiting around for an hour or so before the race my stomach was all over the place. This I believe wasn’t due to the coffee but more my nerves. Anytime I have done a race in the past I am in the port a potty before the race. Good luck to you!!!

a vote for wa-wa! i’ve been practicing my morning routine for weeks now. though it will be a bit different than going from my house to the gym or to the park where i bike/run… i have to arrive at the tri an hour before start time, i do have a plan to make it as close to my home routine, and hopefully it will work out. i’m sure with pre-race jitters i won’t even need the coffee (tmi?) but if i drink it every morning, i not do it the day of the race.

Could you could pick up a cup of brewed coffee the night before and then re-heat it in the microwave?

As for the family, I wouldn’t worry about waking them up. You have to suffer, why shouldn’t they? 🙂 🙂

Good luck! Remember: you win the moment you cross the start line! Heck, in my mind, you’ve already won by completing the training! LOL

ah, there is an idea – getting the coffee the night before and re-heating it.

hmmm…. there is a common theme here in these comments to not worry about waking up my family… interesting!!!!

thanks for your kind words of support, cammy!

I thought it might be this weekend. I will be thinking of you and eagerly awaiting a victory post:) I don’t drink coffee (very often) but remember from my old days how much it can affect things. ahem. So I say on race day you should stick to your home brew. Bring it with you! The family will understand. They have shown their support already:)

    Hugs.

thank you, karen. i can use all the positive vibes i can get! though the VIA some folks have mentioned sounds enticing, perhaps bringing along my home brew is the best idea, as they say not to eat/drink/wear anything differently on race day.

YAY!!!! I am so excited for you – a lot of training has gone into this, and you are going to do great.

As far as the coffee situation goes, heat the coffee up in the room. Your family will have to get over it!! They’ll survive. You’re the one with a triathalon that day — sometimes you have to put yourself first, this is one of those times.

However, I can’t imagine coffee would taste good heated up like that (I’m not sure, I’m not a coffee drinker), so maybe the WAWA trip would be worth it.

Good luck! I agree with the instant starbucks suggestion…having done many many triathlons and marathons, I have the same issue before every race…I NEED my coffee!!! Have it, and have a great race!!!!
